As a member of Change Addiction Now, Washington C.A.N. also recognizes addiction is family disease, for which families need recovery too. C.A.N. also knows families are the missing piece to solving the epidemic of addiction.
It is our mission to bring the family voice to addiction and recovery to Washington communities, to empower families and to create an atmosphere of open exchange without shame or stigma.
WASHINGTON FAMILIES NEED SUPPORT
Many Families in Washington have been burdened by the weight of secret shame and guilt brought on by having a family member diagnosed with Substance Use Disorder.
They hide this secret from friends, co-workers, even from other family members because too often they are held to blame for something they "didn't cause, can't cure, and can't control."
The CDC reports the percentage of Americans "12 years of age and over with any illicit drug use in the past month: 9.2% " (2012) http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/drug-use-illegal.htm
In Washington State that figure is estimated to be as high as 9.7 percent and the impact of having a family member diagnosed with a substance use disorder is devastating.
